Workshop Sessions

The Liberal Arts and Technology
(All)

Speaker: Matthew Vest | Date: Wednesday, July 13

Time: 9:45-10:45 | Location: Chapel

Details:

Modern education sees skills and training as the goal of education. In contrast, the liberal arts are aimed at cultivating the whole man (body, mind and soul). In other words, classical education is aimed not at job-skills, but at the person behind those skills. This "end-goal" focus of classical education is critical for teachers and schools. Moreover, this "end-goal" focus has implications for how we view technology, which has been described as the essential way to a "self-understanding of the age." Is technology a mere "means to an end" such that it is a neutral "tool"? Or, is technology actually linked to who we are as people? If technology is linked to who we are as people, how should we address this as teachers? What is the relationship between the liberal arts and technology?
